Kathmandu, March 8. President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended her best wishes to all the Nepali women at home and abroad for peace, prosperity and happiness on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.
The 109th Women’s Day is being observed across the country, organizing several programmes. Delivering a message on this occasion, President Bhandari urged one and all to coordinate efforts to end all forms of violence against women (VAW) as well as subjugation and disparity.
She called for gender equality, empowerment and guarantee of women rights and human rights and wished the Day inspired all for coordinated efforts to ensure rights, equality and empowerment of women.
Furthermore, the Head of the State, in her message said, “In the wake of the constitution of Nepal guaranteeing rights of women and the government emphasizing women empowerment and gender equality bringing about some positive changes via strategic provisions and institutional management, Nepal could be an exemplary country for all women.”
First celebrated in 1911, the UN in 1977 proclaimed March 8 to be observed as the International Women’s Day. The theme for this year’s Day is: ‘Think Equal, Build Smart and Innovate for Change’.
Constitution empowered women: Vice President Pun
Similarly, Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has stressed the need that all sectors implemented women rights guaranteed by the constitution for women empowerment.
“It is a matter of happiness that the constitution has empowered women with rights,” the Vice President Pun said, wishing that the Day would foster further harmony among all Nepali women.
Special rights to women for some time: Speaker Mahara
Moreover, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, said the inclusive and proportional system and special rights could be provided to women for certain time in view of their status.
The Speaker wished the International Women’s Day inspired everyone to work in unison for the campaign of women’s rights, gender equality, and women empowerment.
Civilized society to end discrimination: NA Chairman Timilsina
On the same occasion, National Assembly Chairperson Ganesh Prasad Timilsina in his message of best wishes stressed the need for creating a civilised society wherein all sorts of discrimination would come to an end.
Equal opportunities, social security, financial inclusiveness and absence of discrimination are necessary ingredients to create a society with gender equality, he stressed in the message. The International Women’s Day is being observed across the country today.
