Kathmandu, June 4 . The Supreme Court has opened the door for the government to continue with 30 per cent customs duty in sugar import.

A division bench of Justice Dipak Kumar Karki and Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai on Monday quashed an interim order issued earlier following a writ petition filed against the government’s decision. The petition had been filed by the Gyan Enterprise Partnership Firm, Shyam Baba Enterprises Pvt. Ltd, among others.

Concluding that the customs duty on sugar import was as per the law, the Court today decided to endorse the government decision on the same.

Meanwhile, the Apex Court today issued an order in the name of the government to not implement the decision to allow heavy and large vehicles to play on the BP Highway.
A single bench of Justice Sapana Malla issued an interim order against the decision taken by the cabinet on May 27 to allow big vehicles on the highway (from Sindhulimadi to Khurkot).

The court has asked the government to come up with a response in writing within 15 days, outlining the reasons behind opening the highway for heavy and large vehicles. The order comes in response to a petition filed by advocate Kailash Raj Dahal.
