‘Monopoly in vegetable market to be ended’

Kathmandu, June 4 . The government authorities today made on-site monitoring of the Kathmandu-based Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable market today following complaints that the monopoly of middlemen and traders in vegetable sales has hit the people hard.
Though the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Committee is a government-run body, there is no end of syndicate of traders who have been operating shops for around two decades. The committee was established in 2055 BS. Since then, a handful of traders have been running the vegetable market on monopoly.
The committee has provided 601 sales units to local entrepreneurs. In course of the monitoring, Minister for Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperative Chakrapani Khanal said that the vegetable and fruit market monopoly would be brought to an end even by amending the regulations on the committee’s market operation.
The monitoring was carried out to establish easy contact between the producers and consumers and protect consumers’ rights, shared Minister’s press advisor Bomalal Giri. Also present on the occasion of monitoring was Minister of State for Agriculture Ram Kumari Chaudhary.
