Sindhuli Road rehabilitation concluded by JICA

Kathmandu December 11- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has accomplished rehabilitation of the Sindhuli Road (BP Highway) which was damaged by the April 25 earthquake and subsequent major aftershocks.

Particularly, the earthquakes had damaged Section II (Sindhuli Bazaar to Khurkot) and Section III (Khurkot to Nepalthok). The nature of the damages was of two types—settlement and corresponding cracks on the road surface and road structure or surface damage by hitting rocks.

Out of the total 29 damaged sites, JICA supported for the recovery of 12 most critically damaged sites. Nippon Koei Company Limited assisted the Department of Roads and the Sindhuli Road Construction Project to identify the damaged sites and recommend the necessary measures for its recovery, Jica said in a statement.

JICA supported in the rehabilitation through its current project, “The Project for Operation and Maintenance of the Sindhuli Road”. The rehabilitation work started on June 16 and was completed by November 27 with a cost of Rs60 million.

With this accomplishment, the Sindhuli Road is under full operation as before. The construction was supervised by Japanese Experts from Nippon Koei and carried out by Nepalese contractor Swachanda Nirman Sewa Private Limited. No accident was reported during the construction period.

The 160km long Sindhuli road links Kathmandu, the capital city, with the Tarai plain.
This road construction started in 1996 and opened to the public and handed over to the Department of Road at the beginning of March 2015.
