Import plunges by 34% due to blockade

Kathmandu November 22- Due to the unofficial blockade of India and Tarai unrest, total import has declined by 33.6% and export has declined by 26.4%.

According to Trade and Export Promotion Centre, checkpoint disturbance has lead to decline in import significantly. in the first of last three months of current fiscal year, goods worth of Rs. 196 billion 830 million were imported, while in the second month, it dropped to Rs. 130 billion 680million which further decreased to Rs. 16 billion 820 million in the third month. During these three months, imports of petroleum products have been diminished vigorously.

In the corresponding three months of last fiscal year, Rs. 31 billion 710 million worth of goods were imported which have decreased by 57.8% to Rs. 13 billion 350 million in the last three months of  current fiscal year.

In the first quarter of current FY, import of Iron and steel and their productions have decreased by 20.2% to Rs. 15 billion 140 million, transportation vehicle and its spare parts have decreased by 35.1% to Rs. 8 billion 970 million, electronics goods have decreased by 41.3% to Rs. 5 billion 40 million, medicines have decreased by 33.8% to Rs. 3.23 billion, machinery and parts have decreased by 29.6% to Rs. 8.09 billion and polythene granules have decreased by 34.9% to Rs. 3.03 billion.
