China agrees to open Gorkha border point throughout the year

Kathmandu Oct 8- The Chinese government has decided to open the Chekampar transit point in northern part of the district round-the-year in wake of the severity of shortage of fuel along with other essential supplies due to unofficial blockade by Indian in the southern border. Earlier, the Chinese government had been opening the Chekampar border point only for a period usually from mid July to mid August. After the massive 7.6 Richter scale earthquake on April 25, the Gorkha District Administration Office had made repeated attempts to open up the border point.
The Tibetan Foreign Office sent a letter to Nepal's Ministry of Commerce and Supplies and Home Ministry apprising of the decision to operate the border point throughout the year. The Chinese market places closest to Chekampar point is Sya and Jong markets in Tibet. Gorkha's Chief District Officer Uddav Prasad Timalsena said the DAO had received a letter of the decision to open the border point throughout the year and added that the step would facilitate the locals in northern Gorkha to lead an easy livelihood.
