Ensure rights of employers: CNI

Kathmandu, July-22 Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has suggested that the country adopt open market economic model and ensure rights of employers in the constitution.

CNI submitted its suggestions on the new constitution to Chairman of Constituent Assembly Subas Chandra Nembang on Tuesday.

After submitting the report, Hari Bhakta Sharma, senior vice-president of CNI, said they have suggested adopting liberal economic model as all major political parties had expressed commitment to adopt liberal economic model in their election manifestos made public before the Constituent Assembly (CA) election.

The use of 'socialism-oriented economy' in the draft of constitution has left private sector worrying. As the fear the government might take control of all economic activities, they have suggested replacing 'socialism-oriented economy' with 'open and liberal economy'.

CNI has suggested putting a ban on banda and strike so that people can exercise their right to do business. It has also asked the lawmakers to recognize employers' rights as a fundamental right.

"Our constitution should also ensure rights of employers, like the rights of employees," said Sharma.

CNI has opposed the provision of ensuring participation of employees in the management. With investors' confidence worsening, private sector has been lobbying for provision that ensures security of investment and compensation for damages inflicted on businesses by miscreants.

Sharma also said the constitution should clearly say that Nepali citizens have the right to do business in any province of the country without any hindrance. The constitution should also state that 'private industry won't be nationalized', said Sharma.

Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCC) had submitted its suggestions on the draft of constitution on Monday.
