PM Koirala urges NRNs for technology, skill and investment

Bangkok, March 6 – Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has urged Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) to put in technology, skill and investment for their motherland's development.

 

Prime Minister Koirala made this appeal today during a meeting with NRNs living in Thailand in course of returning home after participating in the Third Summit of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi- Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), concluded in Myanmar.

 

On the occasion, Prime Minister Koirala said that it was necessary to develop relations in public level, to attract NRNs for investment in Nepal and to use the skill gained in foreign countries.

 

He said, "Your support and goodwill is important to make the political, social and economic transformation process successful."

 

Stating that the incumbent government was active to accelerate the economic development programmes and constitution writing simultaneously, the Prime Minister called the NRNs for their contribution in the development of their forefathers' country as an investment-friendly environment is created gradually.

 

He said that the country could be transformed during a decade's period if bodies concerned including NRNs, the civil society and entrepreneurs engage with mutual coordination as all political parties have agreed to work for the economic development of the country after promulgating a new constitution within a year.

 

Stating the fact that hundreds of thousands of Nepali youths have been going abroad for employment and the country's economy was functioning from the remittances they sent back home, Prime Minister Koirala said the government aimed at providing jobs to them by establishing industries.

 

Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Bahadur Pandey said the government was positive regarding supporting the NRNs in development works that ensure the prosperity of the Nepali people. He added that the Nepalese Embassy in Thailand would assist the NRN community here.

 

Noting that we could get through the most daunting of obstacles and hindrances if we moved ahead being united, he called upon the NRNs to be organised and work for keeping high the name Nepal.

 

"Encourage the Buddhist Thais to visit Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha; which would support promotion of religious tourism and earning foreign currency." Minister Pandey said.

 

President of the NRNA Thailand chapter Khagendra Dhakal said that they were ready to invest in Nepal but were not able to collect the expected investment for lack of a conducive environment.

 

Patron of the Thai Nepali Association, David Khanal, called on the government to provide them with the NRN identity cards. Some 200 NRNs are running various businesses in Thailand at present.

 

Prime Minister Koirala and the Nepali delegation led by him was seen off at the Swarnabhumi International Airport by Charge d'Affaires at the Nepalese Embassy, Bangkok Mr Dornath Aryal and senior embassy officials as well as officials of the protocol division at the Thai Foreign Ministry.
