Ilam makes more than Rs 3 b in milk production
Ilam, Jan 17 – Dairy milk production in Ilam has increased by 4.56 per cent in 2070 BS.
A total of 110,817 tons of milk has been produced in the district so far in 2070 against 105, 978 tons last year.
Dairy farmers have sold milk and milk products worth 3.5 billion rupees in the year so far, according to the District Livestock Service Office.
Dairy milk here is being sold at an average 30 rupees per liter, says Ajrun Siwakoti of the Ilam Dairy Producers´ Cooperatives Limited.
Artificial insemination in cows and buffaloes is leading to an increase in milk production, claims the Office.
There are around 34,000 hybrid cows and 9,677 local cows bred for milk production in the district. However, the number of local buffaloes is higher than that of the hybrid type.
Farmers in more than 36 villages in the district are into dairy farming, with direct involvement of more than 55,000 households.
An individual farmer on an average sells five to 40 liters of milk every day, says technician at the office, Padam Rai.
