Students crisis: Six govt schools closed, 50 others on verge of closure

Bhaktapur, Jan 9 – Six government schools in Bhaktapur district have been shut down and 50 others are on the verge of closure for lack of students.

According to the District Education Office (DEO), Bhaktapur, the closed schools are Mahakali Primary School, Natyashwori Primary School and Manakamana Primary School of Chhaling, Dakshinkali Primary School of Tathali, Ganesh Primary School of Bageshwori, Binayak Saraswoti Lower Secondary School of Duwakot and Balbodh Shanti Lower Secondary School of Chochhe.

Officer at the DEO, Lalit Bikram Singh, said the schools are closed due to student crunch.

Singh said that a teacher each has been assigned to these schools to look after the school property while the remaining teachers have been transferred to other schools in the district.

Of the closed schools, some children are coming to the Binayak Saraswoti Lower Secondary School after it launched the Early Childhood Development programme recently.

Similarly, 50 other schools in the district are on the verge of closure. Of them, most are primary schools, he added.

Singh said that the schools have least number of students for the past few years, adding, "We have directed the schools to increase the number of students."

There is a provision that a school having less than 50 students should be closed down or be merged with another school.

Singh said that a decision has not been drawn yet whether to close the schools or merge them as the schools have only 10-22 students.

The DEO has directed the schools to increase the number of students in the upcoming academic session and it has been providing necessary support for the same, Singh added.
