NC‚ UCPN-M agree to draft statute within a year

Kathmandu, Dec 8 – The Nepali Congress (NC) and the UCPN-Maoist have agreed to promulgate the new constitution within a year.

During the meeting between the two parties held at the residence of UCPN-M Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Lazimpat today, the representatives of both parties agreed to promulgate the new constitution by resolving all contentions within a year.

On the occasion, NC urged the UCPN-Maoist to participate in constitution drafting process upholding the people's mandate obtained through recent elections to the Constituent Assembly (CA).

However, the Maoists stuck to their demand that a high-level probe commission be formed to carry out investigations on rigging and policy flaws seen in the course of election to the Constituent Assembly (CA), which restricted the former largest party in CA to third position after NC and the CPN-UML.

Stating that UCPN-Maoist was in favour of peace and constitution, Chairman Dahal demanded investigation of structural, policy and institutional rigging taking place in CA election.

“We are ready to solve all such issues through talks,” said NC Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel.

Stating that today's meeting was positive on many aspects, Poudel added that they urged the UCPN-Maoist to support the constitution writing.

“The talks were positive on many terms, however, the Maoists are still adamant about the formation of an investigation unit to examine the polls,” Poudel said. “They have nonetheless shown some signs of flexibility. NC always welcomes such approach.”

President Sushil Koirala, Vice-President Ram Chandra Poudel, General Secretary duo- Prakashman Singh and Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Treasurer Chitralekha Yadav from the NC and Chairman Dahal and leaders Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Narayankaji Shrestha and Posta Bahadur Bogati from the UCPN-Maoist were present in the meeting.

The NC and the CPN-UML, in the meeting held on Saturday, had decided to hold separate meetings with the UCPN-Maoist today.

Another meeting between the top Maoist leaders and their CPN-UML counterparts is also underway at Dahal’s residence.
