Vice President Jha for promoting agro sector
Kathmandu, August 25 – Vice-President Paramanand Jha has said that it was unfortunate that Nepal, an agro-based country, has a compulsion of importing food grains from other countries.
At a programme organised by the Agriculture Journalists´ Society, on the occasion of second anniversary of ´Krishi weekly´ on Sunday, Vice-President Jha said that the government should bring a policy to promote production growth as demands for food grains is also increased with the increasing population.
Jha said the government should bring such programmes which promote agriculture sector at a time when more than 80 per cent population are depending on agriculture and added that the country would be self- sufficient in agriculture gradually if irrigation system in Terai was strengthened.
Jha stressed that Nepali workers who have been in foreign countries in course of overseas employment, should utilize knowledge related to agriculture, which they gained in connection to overseas employment, in Nepal.
On the occasion, Minister for Agriculture Development, Tek Bahadur Gharti Thapa, said that the Ministry is in preparation to bring necessary policies and programmes for the development of agriculture sector.
Similarly, Chairman of the Society and editor of the ´Krishi Weekly´, Baikuntha Bhandari complained that they could not get support from all sides as per their expectations even after they published the newspaper regarding agriculture at the time when political journalism is being powerful in Nepal.
On the occasion, Madan Rai, Yogendra Kumar Karki and Shree Krishna Adhikari, among others were honoured for their contribution in agro sector.
