Terai region hit hard by bandh, imposed by Kamlharis

Kathmandu, June 4 – Life in some 22 districts of the Terai region has been partially affected due to day-long bandh (shutdown strike) organised by Struggle Committee for Abolishment of Kamlhari Tradition on Tuesday.

The Committee which has been agitating for liberation of Kamlharis, female bonded labourers from Tharu community who serve in the houses of rich and middle-class people, said they organised the strike against police intervention in their peaceful sit-in demonstration in front Singha Durbar in Kathmandu and district administration office in Dang district since Friday.

Few Kamlharis were injured and dozens others were detained briefly after the police intervened in the demonstration in front of Singha Durbar on Monday.

The Struggle Committee has been actively supported by various Tharu organisations to impose the bandh in districts like Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali and Kanchanpur, districts which have been most affected by the strike.
