Constitutional Council recommends Karki as CIAA chief

Kathmandu,May 5 – The constitutional council has nominated former Chief Secretary Lok Man Singh Karki as Chief Commissioner of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority — as per the recommendations made by the High-level Political Mechanism.
Acting Chief Justice Damodar Prasad Sharma, who is also an ex-officio member of the council, informed that the council has named Karki as CIAA chief, Bhanu Acharya as Auditor General and Kaya Devi Yami as Chief Commissioner of Public Service Commission.
The news comes just a few hours after Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala, who is also the chief of the High-level Political Mechanism — formed to 'facilitate' the electoral process, said his party would never back Lok Man Singh Karki's candidacy for chief of the country's main anti-corruption body.
A section of the Nepali press and a group of civil society members had been lobbying hard against the former chief bureaucrat accusing him of being involved in suppressing the historic People's movement, and several corruption cases.
