Fire destroys worth Rs 330 million in Kulekhani Hydropower

Hetaunda, April 17 – A massive fire broke out in the Kulekhani Hydropower Project- II in Makawanpur distirct on Tuesday midnight has destroyed three transformers worth Rs 330 million.

After the fire in the Bhainse VDC-based facility, power generation and supply have been affected.

According to the authorities, generation of 32 MW electricity has been disrupted while the Project-I is running smoothly.

Personnel from the Nepal Army and Nepal Police and locals struggled to douse the fire.

With the help of fire engines brought from Chitwan, Birgunj and Hetaunda, the fire was contained after a couple of hours.


The overall process to replace the damaged equipment, and resume the power generation from the Project II will take seven to eight months, according the project officials.

It has been learnt that a panel has been constituted to find probe the incident. It is expected that the details would be make public after the probe panel submits its report.
