Manakamana Cable Car to be be closed for 50 days

MUGLIN, JUNE 16: Nepal's first cable car, the Manakamana Cable Car, will be closed for 50 days for maintenance andupgrades. Manakamana Darshan Pvt. Ltd. has announced that the service will be unavailable for approximately 50 days starting July 15 due to the upgrading of the cable car's digital system.

Ujjwal Sherchan, Deputy General Manager of Manakamana Darshan Pvt. Ltd., stated that the cable cars, which currently operate on 'analogue' technology, will be upgraded to modern digital technology with fibre. According to him, in addition to upgrading the digital system, the main wire will also be replaced. Sherchan mentioned that the main cable wire rod will be replaced after 26 years of service. Skilled technicians from the Australian Doppelmayr Company will be responsible for the upgrade works. The Manakamana Cable Car will undergo these upgrades in various stages.

The cable car service was initiated on November 24, 1998, to facilitate pilgrims visiting the famous religious site in Sahid Lakhan Rural Municipality of Gorkha district. Despite the closure of the cable car service, Manakamana Darshan Pvt. Ltd. has assured that the restaurant service at the entrance (bottom station) of the cable car located at Ichchhakamana-4 Kurintar (Cheres) in Chitwan will remain open.
