Yeti Airlines Sued for Pokhara Air Crash; Rs 800 Million Compensation Demanded

KATHMANDU, JULY 2: A lawsuit has been filed in the Kathmandu District Court against Yeti Airlines demanding Rs 800 million in compensation. Madan Kaji Shrestha, along with his spouse Bhimmaya Shrestha, did so by claiming that they had lost three family members in an air crash triggered by the sheer negligence of the company. These members include their son (Dr. Sushil Shrestha), daughter-in-law (Dr. Sona Diwakar), and grandson. They along with 69 other passengers on board were killed in the crash of Yeti's ATR 72 on January 15 last year in Pokhara.

In the lawsuit, Yeti Airlines was accused of trying to land the aircraft on the runway at Pokhara Airport by disregarding necessary technical procedures, including a demo flight.

The plaintiffs have also argued that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) is responsible for the accident as it allowed the airline company to proceed with the landing without complying with the set safety procedures.

According to legal expert Amrik Kharel, the lawsuit was filed as per the Consumer Protection Act 2018 and the Nepal Treaty Act 1990 since Yeti overlooked the safety of its passengers.
