Molasses worth Rs 150 million exported to Bangladesh

BHADRAPUR, SEPTEMBER 1: Molasses worth Rs 149.3 million were exported to Bangladesh from the Kakadbhitta border in the Jhapa district in the last fiscal year. According to Subash Pandey, head of the Kakadbhitta branch office of Nepal Transit and Warehouse Management Company Limited, 9,741.65 metric tons of molasses were exported to Bangladesh in 2023/24.
As of the second week of the current Nepali month of Bhadra (Aug 17 to Sept 16) in the current fiscal year, 3,555.6 metric tons of molasses, worth NPR 53.19 million, have already been exported to Bangladesh.
Businessman and clearing agent Navin Dahal mentioned that the demand for Nepalese molasses has increased since India imposed a 50% tax on molasses exported to Bangladesh. He further stated that with this heavy taxation, the export of molasses from Nepal to Bangladesh is expected to rise in the coming days. Dahal added that large-scale molasses exports to Bangladesh will begin in November/December when sugarcane processing starts.
According to Pandey, the trade between Nepal and Bangladesh occurs through the eastern Kakarbhitta border in Nepal, passing across Phulbari in West Bengal, India, and Banglabandha in northern Bangladesh.
