Govt committed to forward broader scheme of social security: PM Oli

KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 26: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has reaffirmed the government's commitment to the broader concept of social security. In a message of best wishes on the occasion of the 7th Social Security Day, he emphasized that the government is actively working to implement the social security scheme in a systematic and effective manner. “There is no longer a situation in the country where citizens feel unprotected or without guardianship. The State and government are here to ensure the welfare of its people,” he stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted that social justice and dignity are central to the government's vision of prosperity, ensuring no citizen is left in helplessness. He noted that social security is enshrined as a fundamental right in the constitution. "To realize this broader concept, the government has been preparing action plans, programs, and budgets, and implementing them accordingly," he added.
PM Oli also reflected on the origins of Nepal's social security initiatives, recalling that the first government-led social security scheme was introduced in 2051 BS under a CPN-UML government. This program provided monthly allowances to senior citizens, single women, and vulnerable groups, laying the foundation for a welfare state committed to social justice and equality.
He described social security as an integral part of societal progress, State responsibility, and social engineering. Furthermore, he noted the recent introduction of the contribution-based social security scheme, emphasizing the importance of individual contributions to sustaining a comprehensive social security system.
