Nepal sells electricity worth over Rs 13 billion to India

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 22 : Nepal exported electricity valued at Rs 13.04 billion to India during the first five months of the current fiscal year, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) The surplus electricity, after meeting domestic consumption, was sold to the Indian market.
The electricity, generated during the monsoon months of Shrawan 9mid-Auguat to mid-September0, Bhadra (mid-September to mid-October), Ashoj (mid-September to mid-October), Kartik (mid-October to mid-November), and Mangsir (mid-November to mid-December), was exported at an average rate of Rs 7.39 per unit, as per the bilateral agreement between Nepal and India.
The NEA reported that electricity exports were lower during the review due to disruptions caused by floods, landslides, and the dry season. Shrawan recorded the highest export value, with electricity worth Rs 4.15 billion exported, followed by a gradual decline in subsequent months.
The NEA has set an ambitious target to export electricity worth approximately Rs 30 billion by the end of the fiscal year. However, with the arrival of winter, reduced water flow in rivers and streams is expected to lower electricity production from hydropower projects, potentially impacting the very export target.
