Hotel Mercure: A landmark of luxury and community development
KATHMANDU, JANUARY 5: A striking 11-story building stands prominently at Sukedhara’s main intersection in Kathmandu, housing the internationally renowned Hotel Mercure. This prestigious brand operates under the Accor Group, which manages over 5,400 hotels across more than 100 countries, spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The introduction of this globally acclaimed hotel chain to Nepal is credited to Deshbandhu Basnet (Ajit), a member of the executive committee of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
According to Basnet, the five-star Hotel Mercure, constructed with a total investment of NPR 3 billion, is scheduled to open in the second week of January 2025. The hotel, situated on five ropanis of land, offers 104 luxury rooms designed to meet the needs of both leisure and business travelers.
In addition to luxurious accommodations, the hotel features Nepali, Indian, and Chinese restaurants, a swimming pool, and a banquet hall capable of hosting hundreds of guests simultaneously.
“Hotel Mercure provides a serene lobby bar and tranquil surroundings for our guests. From the 11th floor, visitors can enjoy swimming while taking in panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. They can also savour coffee or beverages while admiring the breathtaking Himalayan vistas,” said Basnet.
To cater to professional and social events, the hotel offers spacious suite halls. Additional amenities include a modern gym, steam and sauna facilities, and a wellness centre, ensuring a holistic and luxurious experience for all guests.
A Vision Beyond Hospitality
Interestingly, the hotel is not limited to the grandeur of its building. The expansive open space in front has been meticulously landscaped, with the addition of a concrete boundary wall and the construction of approximately 140 meters of public road.
“If I wanted, I could have simply built a hotel on my private land,” Basnet explained. “However, I chose a more inclusive approach by constructing a public road and a greenery park around the hotel, creating a space that benefits the entire community.”
This vision reflects Basnet’s commitment to sustainable and community-driven development, making Hotel Mercure not just a symbol of luxury but also a catalyst for local progress.
