Three-day trek to begin today for tourism promotion
FIKKAL (ILAM), JANUARY 8: A three-day trek along the historical Nisan trekking route commenced today in Ilam to promote tourism in the region.
Organized by the Nepal Army's Ranashardul Battalion in Ilam, the 42-kilometer trek follows the trail used to transport the "Nisan" (military insignia) after the unification of Nepal. The Nisan, hoisted after conquering the eastern border, was brought back to Maisthan Temple in Ilam district headquarters.
Chief of the Ranashardul Battalion, Pralhad Ghale, stated that the trek begins at the origin of the Mechi River along the Nepal-India border and concludes at the Maisthan Temple.
This historic Nisan trek has been meticulously planned, tracing the path taken to retrieve the military insignias planted by the then Shreenath Battalion after the eastern territories were conquered. A team comprising Nepal Army personnel, local representatives, tourism entrepreneurs, and stakeholders is undertaking the trek, which will conclude on January 10th.
Locals have enthusiastically prepared to welcome the trek participants along the route. Reception programs have been planned at various locations within Suryodaya Municipality, Maijogmai Rural Municipality, and Ilam Municipality.
Suryodaya Municipality Mayor, Rana Bahadur Rai, expressed confidence that the trek will significantly contribute to the promotion of tourism in Ilam. He emphasized that the trekking route, developed by exploring the history of the war that occurred nearly 200 years ago, is expected to boost the district's overall tourism sector.
Ilam Municipality Mayor, Kedar Thapa, highlighted that the mapping of the Nisan trekking route has facilitated the identification, conservation, and promotion of Ilam's rich historical, religious, and cultural heritage. He further emphasized that the route will play a crucial role in preserving history and enhancing tourism in the entire district.
Historical records indicate that the Shreenath Singh Battalion, stationed at Nagarigadhi in Mirik, was relocated to Purnedanda at Karfok in Suryodaya Municipality due to security concerns following the Sugauli Treaty. Subba Jayant Khatri, implementing the treaty agreement, vacated Nagarigadhi and brought the battalion to Karfolk, then the district headquarters.
The Maisthan Temple, believed to have been constructed in 1880 BS, now houses the preserved Nisan.
