Karnali's ginger reaches international market

KANKREBIHA (SURKHET): An industry in Surkhet, Nepal, has begun exporting ginger and turmeric products to Europe, creating a new market for local farmers. The Kalidamar-based industry purchases these spices directly from local producers, addressing a previous lack of market access for farmers in the region.
High-quality, organic ginger and turmeric from Karnali and Lumbini provinces are in high demand in Europe, according to Sulochana Shrestha, Managing Director of the industry. "With exports underway, sales are no longer a concern," she says. "Our focus now shifts towards increasing production."
The industry processes 1,500 metric tonnes of ginger and turmeric annually, benefiting over 1,400 farmers. This year, ginger cultivation has expanded to over 850 ropanis of land. The company aims to purchase 2.2 million kilograms of ginger and export 230 tonnes of dried ginger to Europe.
