KMC starts installing 'dry riser system' for fire safety

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 19: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated the installation of a dry riser system in narrow alleys inaccessible to fire engines during emergencies.

The KMC’s Department of Disaster Management has intensified efforts to implement this system. According to Superintendent of Police Bishnu Prasad Joshi of KMC, the dry riser system has already been installed in Ward No. 6, 7, 9, 13, 17, 18, 21, 25, and 27. Installation activities are ongoing in other wards based on necessity.

"The dry riser system is expected to aid in fire control, with outlets placed every 45 to 75 meters. The system features inlets at both ends, allowing fire engines to pump water through the inlets, which can then be accessed from the outlets as required," Joshi explained.

The system delivers water at a pressure of 8 bars, enabling it to reach up to the seventh floor of a building.
