Govt. once again asks social media platforms for registration

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 3: The Nepalese government has once again instructed social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn to register in the country. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology issued a notice today, requiring individuals, companies, or organizations operating social media platforms in Nepal to officially register with the ministry and appoint a designated contact person.
For the past year, the ministry has been urging compliance with the Social Media Regulation Guidelines, 2023. Despite multiple requests, only three platforms—TikTok, Viber, and Bittok—have completed the registration process.
As per Clause 3 of the guidelines, any entity wishing to operate a social media platform in Nepal must register with the ministry. Clause 6 further mandates that companies establish a local contact point, designate a grievance officer and implement self-regulation measures to ensure compliance.
Additionally, a recent Cabinet decision has outlined key responsibilities for social media platforms operating in Nepal. These include supporting Nepal’s tourism promotion and launching nationwide initiatives on cybersecurity and digital literacy.
