KMC examining quality of 24 various types of foods

KATHMANDU, APRIL 13: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has initiated quality testing of more than 24 different types of products—including food items, fruits, and vegetables—through its newly launched mobile laboratory.

According to KMC food technician Bharati Adhikari, the mobile lab was first deployed to test the quality of food served at canteens operating within Paropakar Maternity and Women's Hospital and Norvic Hospital in Thapathali.

An agreement has already been signed between KMC and the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control to facilitate this initiative. Under the agreement, a joint team from both entities is conducting on-site inspections of food businesses, testing hygiene standards, and analyzing food samples.

The mobile laboratory is equipped with various tools, including devices for detecting pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables. It also features a Milk Adulteration Kit, lactometer, water adulteration kit, and pH meter, according to Shree Ram Neupane, Food Quality Rest Officer at the Department.

Samples collected from markets can be tested on the spot, with results available instantly. This mobile food lab has been introduced to ensure continuous monitoring and improvement of food quality standards across the city.
