Nepal secures extra 4 hours of Indian electricity

It will boost supply by 600 MW, warding off industrial power cuts

KATHMANDU, MAY 2 : The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and the Indian Exchange Market have entered into an agreement for an additional 4 hours of electricity purchase. Previously, Nepal had been purchasing electricity through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line from 6 AM to 5 PM. This new agreement extends the purchase window by an additional four hours.

With this agreement in place, the NEA has announced that Nepal will now receive 600 MW of electricity from 2 AM to 5 PM. Furthermore, the NEA stated that the amount of electricity generated by the private sector has increased due to the rise in water flow in rivers and streams.

This development is expected to reduce the ongoing power outages in industries. Industrial customers are expected to receive electricity according to their demand from 2 AM to 5 PM.

In a statement released by the NEA yesterday, it was mentioned, "The current management has placed a high priority on ensuring regular and reliable electricity availability in the industrial sector. Efforts have been made to import electricity from India, even at the maximum price, until domestic production can meet the demand. This will also resolve some of the issues faced by industrial customers."
