Monsoon to become inactive for a week

KATHMANDU, JUNE 1: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, through its Meteorological Forecasting Division, has announced that the monsoon, which entered Nepal 15 days earlier than the average onset date, will remain inactive for the next seven days.

According to the Division, the monsoon system entered Nepal from the east on Thursday night and has already spread across most parts of Koshi Province. However, due to its expected dormancy, rainfall is likely to decrease, and temperatures may rise over the coming week.

Meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal stated that although the average onset date of the monsoon in Nepal is June 13, this year it arrived early—on May 29—from the eastern region. “While the monsoon has reached most parts of Koshi Province, it has now become inactive and is not expected to advance further or bring significant rainfall for the next week,” he explained.

Heavy rainfall recorded in the eastern region on the day of the monsoon’s arrival led to flooding and landslides, resulting in damage to infrastructure.

Hydrologist Binod Parajuli from the Department reported that over 200 millimeters of rain fell in the eastern region on the day the monsoon entered. He noted that the sudden rise in river water levels triggered localized flooding in some areas.
