PM consults with locals to resolve disputes about Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway

KATHMANDU, JUNE 9: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli met with local residents and representatives from Khokana and Bungmati to discuss the ongoing dispute concerning the starting point of the Kathmandu-Tarai/Madhes Expressway.
Nepal Dangol, coordinator of the Local People's Concerns Committee, along with other representatives, presented an alternative solution: shifting the Expressway's initial point to Dukuchhap. They believe this adjustment would not only resolve the current conflict but also help preserve the civilisation and cultures of Khokana.
During the discussion, Prime Minister Oli assured local leaders he would visit the site to better understand and help resolve the dispute before making any final decisions. He emphasised the government's commitment to undertaking development without causing harm to local communities.
Defence Secretary Rameshwor Dangal, officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, and representatives from the Nepali Army were also in attendance.
This meeting follows an earlier discussion on February 5, where PM Oli addressed the project's progress and challenges with key officials. These included Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal, Minister for Defence Man Bir Rai, PM's Economic Affairs Advisor Dr. Yubraj Khatiwada, and Chief of Army Staff Ashokraj Sigdel.
The Expressway, which spans 70.97 kilometers, is estimated to cost Rs 211.93 billion and is scheduled for completion by mid-April 2026.
