UNDP Human Development Report 2025 released; Nepal ranked 145th

KATHMANDU, JUNE 11:The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched its Human Development Report 2025 at an event held yesterday in the capital
The report focuses on the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the multidimensional aspects of human development. It highlights how AI can strengthen human development, promote inclusion, and foster a just society.
According to the report, Nepal falls under the category of countries with medium human development in the Human Development Index (HDI), ranking 145th with a score of 0.622. It also notes that Nepal’s HDI has increased by 54 per cent over the past 35 years.
Speaking at the launch event, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung stated that Nepal is taking policy-level initiatives to promote artificial intelligence, foster a digital economy, establish data centers, and attract foreign direct investment.
A national policy has been adopted to increase the use of AI in research and development, and studies are underway to explore its application in sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.
Minister Gurung emphasized that the Himalayan region’s cold climate and the availability of affordable green energy (hydropower) make Nepal an attractive destination for setting up data centers.
He also informed that the government plans to establish IT hubs in each province and is working to develop the necessary infrastructure. He expressed confidence that the Digital Nepal Framework, which is already under implementation, will be further refined and systematically executed to enhance digital governance, improve public service delivery, and expand digital access for all citizens.
On the occasion, UNDP Nepal Resident Representative Kyoko Yokosuka said the report explores both the benefits and challenges of AI adoption. In the context of Nepal, she noted that AI could play a transformative role in inclusive service delivery, enhancing the efficiency of local governments, disaster management, climate change mitigation, and data-driven policymaking.
