PHUNGLIN, JANUARY 2: The number of tourists going to see the third tallest peak in the world, Kanchanjungha, has declined sharply owing to the growing chill of late. Tourism entrepreneur Pema Sherpa informed RSS that the area witnessed severe cold for some days, resulting in a decline in tourist arrivals. However, they had not witnessed snowfall this year. The hotel and lodges are closed after not getting visitors.
The hoteliers of the Kanchanjungha area have shifted down to Phungling, while some to Kathmandu city to avoid the cold. The Kanchanjungha area witnessed the arrival of a huge number of tourists before the cold, according to Tasi Tenjing Sherpa, a person affiliated with the Kanchanjungha Conservation Area Management Council. “From September 10 2023 to January 14 2024, the area had recorded entry of 760 tourists from different countries. It was the highest number of tourist inflow since the outbreak of COVID-19,” he reminded.
