IGP Khanal leaves for Thailand to participle in BIMSTEC meet
Kathmandu, March 20. Inspector General of Police Sarbendra Khanal has left here today for Thailand to take part in the third security officials’ meeting of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical Economic Cooperation).
He will be leading the Nepali delegation to the two-day meeting commencing tomorrow. Deputy Inspector General of Armed Police Force, Khadga Bahadur Rai; National Investigation Department’s investigation director Laxman Gurung and section officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Somesh Thapa are among those in the delegation.
Terrorism, drugs peddling, smuggling of arms and ammunition and human trafficking issues, ways to combat them and other issues of public security are the agenda of discussions during the meeting. Experience sharing on efforts made by the member states in relation to peace and security and disaster management will take place during the course of meeting, Nepal Police Spokesperson Uttam Raj Subedi said.
The BIMSET security officials’ meeting is being held annually since the past three years. The delegation is scheduled to return home on March 23. Thailand, Bhutan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar including Nepal are the members of BIMSTEC, a sub-regional body founded in June, 1997.
