EC orders to halt ABC TV braodcast

Kathmandu, Nov 18 – The Election Commission (EC) has issued an order in the name of the government to halt the ABC TV broadcasting until the silent period.


The EC takes this decision for not following its previous order to disseminate any programs going against the election code of conduct.

According to the Election Commissioner, Ila Sharma, the Interim Constitution has handed over the responsibilities of holding the CA election to the Commission and that the Article No. 45 of the Election Commission Act-2063 BS has given rights to the Commission to stop any works that is against the election code of conduct.

Sharma said for an implementation of the EC decision, the EC has already written to the government, and the Office of the Interim Election Council (IEC) of Ministers today itself.

Earlier, the EC on Sunday directed the television not to disseminate any news materials by violating the election code of conduct. But, the television found turning a deaf ear towards the EC call and the government has been asked to halt its (ABC) transmission until 5:00 pm of November 19.

Similarly, according to a press statement issued by EC Spokesperson Bir Bahadur Rai, the television has openly violated the provision regarding the dissemination of news in a balanced way.


As per the legal provision, the EC can issue an order to halt any activities of any bodies that cause adverse impact on fairness and credibility of the election.
