KATHMANDU, JANUARY 29: Indian Ministry of External Affairs Additional Secretary, Munu Mahawar, paid a courtesy call on Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Deepak Khadka.
During the Ministry of Energy meeting in Singha Durbar yeserday, discussions focused on strengthening Nepal-India energy cooperation. Minister Khadka expressed gratitude to the Indian government for supplying electricity during Nepal’s dry months, which has helped ease power shortages. He also noted that Nepal’s export of surplus electricity to India during the monsoon season has elevated bilateral cooperation to new heights.
Minister Khadka highlighted Nepal’s agreement with India to export 10,000 megawatts of electricity over the next decade, stating that the ministry has already initiated policy measures to ensure its successful implementation. He emphasized that mutual collaboration and coordination are essential for achieving Nepal’s energy development goals.
He also underscored the significance of the trilateral electricity trade agreement signed between Nepal, India, and Bangladesh on October 3, calling it a historic milestone for South Asia’s energy sector. Additionally, he welcomed the recent Nepal-India Joint Secretary-level meeting in New Delhi, which reached an agreement on the design of two high-voltage cross-border transmission lines.
Minister Khadka further expressed confidence that India would expedite the release of 10 cubic meters per second (cumecs) of water from the Tanakpur main canal to support Nepal’s Mahakali Irrigation Project.
In response, Additional Secretary Mahawar reaffirmed India’s strong interest in investing in Nepal’s hydropower sector and urged Nepal to create a favorable investment climate. He also called for the swift completion of Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for major projects such as Upper Karnali and Pancheshwar. Furthermore, he requested Nepal’s cooperation in facilitating India’s ongoing development of the Upper Arun hydropower project.
The meeting was attended by Energy Ministry Secretary Sarita Dawadi, senior energy expert Prabal Adhikari, and officials from the Indian Embassy in Nepal. Minister Khadka’s private secretary, Manoj Panth, provided details of the discussions.
