‘IT can generate more than Rs 100 billion annually’

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 30: Information Technology (IT) experts have stated that Nepal has the potential to generate over Rs 100 billion annually by producing skilled IT human resources. During a group discussion organized by the Nepali Congress’s Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Department today, the speakers emphasized that even small investments in the IT sector can yield substantial results.

The discussion, titled “Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Development: Preparing for the IT Sector,” took place on the second day of the Nepal Startup and SME Conference at the NC Central Office in Sanepa, Lalitpur.

Sulabh Budhathoki, Head of Innovative Nepal Group, highlighted the importance of investing in the development of skilled human resources, pointing out the many opportunities available in Nepal’s IT sector. He mentioned that with the right focus on human resource development, Nepal could export IT services worth over Rs 100 billion annually.

Tribhuvan University Dean, Prof. Dr. Mahanananda Chalise, called for greater attention to technical education and the technical aspects of general education. He noted that while the government introduces policies, it often overlooks provisions for connecting students to the technical sector.

Mirgendra Karki, Executive Director of CNAS, emphasized that transforming Nepal’s economy could be more achievable if the government promotes locally produced products.

Bibhushan Bista, founder of Young Innovation, suggested that if the government introduced policies to foster the IT sector, Nepal could produce five times more human resources than it currently does, making it possible to export more services. He also stressed the importance of including entrepreneurship in education.

Karvika Thapa, CEO of Khimbu Tech, added that success in any field can only be achieved when individuals choose a subject they are passionate about and work diligently on it.

Urmila Thapaliya, Department Coordinator, expressed her belief that the conference would inspire entrepreneurs and businesspeople who have recently started their ventures.
