Road accidents claim 1,233 lives in six months

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 18: A total of 1,233 people have died in road accidents over the past six months of the current fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. This marks an increase from 1,149 fatalities recorded in the same period last year, despite a decrease in the number of accidents.

The Ministry reported 11,338 road accidents up to January 13, 2025, compared to 12,856 accidents up to January 14, 2024. Despite fewer accidents, the death toll has risen due to careless driving and failure to fully observe traffic rules, according to Home Ministry Spokesperson Ram Chandra Tiwari.

The Ministry's data show that road accident fatalities have increased in Gandaki, Kathmandu Valley, and Karnali, even though the overall number of accidents has decreased in these regions. Conversely, in Madhes Province and Bagmati (Kathmandu Valley), fatalities have declined despite an increase in accidents.

3,134 Suicide Cases Reported in Six Months
In the first six months of the fiscal year 2024/25, 3,134 people died by suicide, down from 3,457 in the same period last fiscal year. The highest number of cases (628) occurred from October 17 to November 15, followed by 471 from November 16 to December 15, and 425 from December 16 to January 13, 2025.

10,776 Cybercrime Complaints Filed
A total of 10,776 cybercrime complaints were registered in the first half of the current fiscal year. Telegram was the most commonly used platform for criminal activities, with 1,187 complaints filed. Additionally, 1,098 complaints were linked to Facebook, 731 to Instagram, and 153 to TikTok.

In comparison, 19,730 cybercrime complaints were registered in the fiscal year 2023/24, and 9,013 in 2022/23.
