Maoist Center Vice- Chair Mahara nabbed in connection with gold smuggling

KATHMANDU, MARCH 18: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police have today arrested the vice-chair of CPN (Maoist Centre) as well as former speaker, Krishna Bahadur Mahara, from Kapilvastu and brought him here in the capital today.
He was taken under control fro as per a report submitted by the high-level probe commission on gold smuggling a few days back. According to the report, the CBI deliberately tried to exempt Mahara (along with then director general of the Department of Immigration Jhalak Ram Adhikari, and former Nepal Police chief and UML leader Sarbendra Khanal) from being investigated regarding a gold scam. The scam pertains to the smuggling of 9kg of gold in December 2022 by concealing inside electronic cigarettes.
Notably, Rahul, son of Krishna Mahara, is already is in for judicial custody for his alleged involvement n the scam. It is said that the father-son duo were indulged in the illicit acts by regularly being in touch the Chinese gold smugglers
