Sugarcane farmers in Kanchanpur deprived of subsidies worth Rs 320 million
KANCHANPUR, NOVEMBER 30: Sugarcane farmers in the Kanchanpur district of Nepal are facing challenges as they have not yet received government subsidies since last year. The government typically provides subsidies to sugarcane farmers who sell their produce to domestic sugar industries. The subsidy is channeled through the Treasury and Comptroller Office in the respective districts where sugar factories operate.
Chetan Kumar Rai, the Treasurer of the Committee to Protect Rights and Interests of Sugarcane Farmers, revealed that sugarcane farmers in Kanchanpur district are awaiting subsidies amounting to Rs 320 million of the last year. The delay in disbursing subsidies has put these farmers in financial difficulties.
The government established a work procedure in 2018 to facilitate the provision of subsidies to sugarcane farmers. Initially, farmers received a subsidy at the rate of Rs 65.28 per quintal, and this was increased to Rs 70 per quintal last year. Kanchanpur district is home to two sugar mills: Bhageshwar Sugar Mill at Punarbas and Mahakali Sugar Mill at Belauri. These mills purchased a total of 2,666,048 quintals of sugarcane from farmers last year.
