Film Southasia 2013 to start on October 3

Kathmandu, Oct  2- A pre-festival event of Film Southasia (FSA) 2013 was held at Yalamaya Kendra, Patan on Tuesday. The event was marked by a press conference, informing the participants about the details of the festival.

 

2013 being FSA’s 17th year and the ninth edition, 382 films representing countries from across Southasia were submitted. 55 documentaries and non-fiction films from these are being featured, out of which 34 films are up for the competition. Award winning films as well as student-films and debut films have been included.

 

Jury of the festival will be chaired by acclaimed arts editor and cultural journalism professor Sadanand Menon of Chennai. Other jury members are veteran photographer, writer, curator and activist Shahidul Alam of Dhaka and film maker, producer and currently Public Media Director at the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) Sapana Shakya of Kathmandu.

 

“With three year’s hard work we have come up with our movie Playing With the Naan. The film speaks of the struggle of a 28 years old Nepali citizen, who migrates to Japan to work in a restaurant.” shared Dipesh Kharel, the film-maker who has co-worked with Asami Saito from Japan for the film.

 

The press conference was followed by screening of Alpavirama 2011, an assortment of six films curated and presented by Arun Gupta of National Institute of Design. It is one of the two special curated packages of the festival, the other being a dedicated section on Afghanistan selected by independent journalist Taran Khan.

 

The screenings are scheduled to take place from October 3 to 6 in two halls at QFX Kumari, Kamalpokhari. The festival features 10 debut filmmakers.

 

Passes need to be collected and paid for on Day 1 at the Info Desk at QFX Kumari. Day Passes are Rs. 200 per day (unlimited films + reserved seating) and Festival Passes are Rs. 600 (unlimited films for all four days + reserved seating + free catalog)
