SC stays National Identity Card as mandatory for public services seekers

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 26 : The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order to temporarily halt the enforcement of the government's decision to make the national identity card mandatory for accessing public services and entitlements.
The division bench of Justices Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma and Til Prasad Shrestha issued the order yesterday, suspending the immediate enforcement of the Ministry of Home Affairs' decision made on June 24 this year.
It is worth noting that advocate Ram Bahadur Raut had filed a writ petition against the government's decision. The Ministry had issued a notice requiring people with disabilities, the elderly, and single women who receive social security allowances to obtain the card starting from mid-July.
