Import of motorcycles via Birgunj Customs double

BIRGUNJ, SEPTEMBER 3: The import of motorcycles through Birgunj Customs, the country’s major transit point, has doubled in the first month of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year. However, imports of jeeps and cars have seen a significant decrease of 40% during the same period.

Raghu Lal Karna, Information Officer at Birgunj Customs Office, reported that 7,150 motorcycles, valued at Rs 944.8 million, were imported between mid-July and mid-August this year. This marks a sharp increase from the 3,571 units worth Rs 467.7 million imported in the same period last year. The current fiscal year, 2024/25, began on July 16.

In contrast, only 76 jeeps and cars, worth approximately Rs 144.4 million, were imported through the transit point during this period, down from 127 units valued at Rs 206 million in the corresponding period last fiscal year.

The revenue collection from these imports also saw a significant increase, with Birgunj Customs Office collecting Rs 884.4 million in the first month of this fiscal year, compared to Rs 442.1 million in the same period last year.
