Effective laws needed to address cheque bounce cases: Finance Minister
KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 9: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Bishnu Poudel has said that the government is working to enforce effective legislation to address cheque bounce cases. Speaking at a meeting of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) yesterday, Minister Poudel noted that the number of cheque bounce cases is increasing daily, making the enactment of effective laws imperative.
Last year, the Cabinet approved the draft Bill 2080 BS to amend the Banking Offenses and Punishment Act, 2064 BS, which was tabled in Parliament by the then Finance Minister, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat. Since then, the parliamentary committee has been holding continuous discussions on various amendment proposals to the bill.
The government drafted the bill based on recommendations from the Supreme Court and the Attorney General's Office to amend the Banking Offenses and Punishment Act, given the need for consistent legal remedies in cheque bounce.
