'Population policy to be revised soon'

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 12: The Ministry of Health and Population has gathered suggestions from the National Planning Commission, various ministries, and experts to revise Nepal's national population policy.
Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Minister Paudel emphasized the need for policy revision to address shifting demographic trends, including a declining population and rural depopulation due to migration.
The 2021 National Census revealed that population numbers have dropped in 34 districts, affecting 319 local levels—a significant demographic shift for Nepal's democracy. “This calls for robust policies,” Minister Paudel noted, urging local governments to actively participate in addressing population decline.
He also highlighted the challenge of creating employment opportunities to ensure citizens benefit from economic growth. The Minister suggested that related laws might need amendment to support the revised policy.
Ministry Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Budhathoki reiterated that expert input will play a critical role in shaping the updated policy and amending relevant legislation.
