NAAMI to host fifth Annual Nepal AI School from Dec. 27

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 25: Nepal Applied Mathematics and Informatics Institute (NAAMII) has announced on that it will host the Annual Nepal AI School (ANAIS), an 11-day academic program. The fifth edition of this flagship event will focus on the foundations and applications of artificial intelligence and will be held from December 27, 2024, to January 6, 2025.

ANAIS is a unique platform in South Asia that brings together scientists, faculty, and participants from around the globe for intensive AI lectures, labs, and project work. According to NAAMII, the course spans from fundamental concepts to a wide range of applications and domains, including cutting-edge ideas and methods in artificial intelligence.

The event, to take place at Premier International School, Khumaltar, will accommodate a total of 200 participants, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students, as well as professionals working in AI from Nepal and beyond. Over the past four editions, more than 550 participants from over 40 countries have attended the AI School.

With the theme “Bigger Things Can Happen from Small Places,” the AI School aims to expose Nepali and international students and AI professionals to the latest global advancements in AI. This year, 25 international scientists and professors with extensive experience in the AI sector will conduct physical classes on three major areas: Geometric Deep Learning, Foundational Models and Applications, and Modern Practices.

Bishesh Khanal, Director of NAAMII, emphasized the importance of the event in fostering knowledge exchange and collaboration in AI. “We are at a pivotal moment in Nepal's journey toward embracing artificial intelligence, as the government drafts its AI policy and releases a concept paper outlining the scope of AI implementation in the country,” he said. “In this dynamic context, we are hopeful to stir necessary discussions and create required expertise in Nepal through ANAIS.”

Alok Khatri, Head of Education Outreach at NAAMII, highlighted the immersive nature of the Annual Nepal AI School. “Over 11 intensive days in each edition, attendees have the chance to learn from world-class experts, participate in practical workshops, and expand their professional networks,” he said. “This has transformed the event into a true festival of AI education and innovation in the region.”

NAAMII has partnered with organizations such as F1Soft, eSewa, fonepay, UK International Development, The Asia Foundation, and Data for Development in Nepal to conduct the event this year. Additional support comes from Young Innovations, SecurityPal, Google, and Fusemachines.
