India nullifies ban on onion exports

KATHMANDU, FEBRUARY 20: The Indian government has lifted the ban on onion exports to six countries including Nepal.  According to reports, a committee formed under the chairmanship of Indian Home Minister Amit Shah lately lifted such a ban to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bahrain, Bhutan and Mauritius apart from the Himalayan nation.

Earlier on December 23, the southern neighbour restricted onion export citing the need to combat the escalating onion prices domestically.  But, now, with the latest ministerial decision, it plans to export 300,000 metric tons of onions.

This could be expected to facilitate not only in the resupply of the very vegetable product to the Nepal from India  but also help in  lowering its prices herein the market.
