KATHMANDU, JANUARY 10: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court challenging the verdict of the Special Court regarding three members of the then Tax Settlement Commission. LD Mahat, Umesh Prasad Dhakal, and Chunamani Sharma are the individuals in question, and the CIAA contends that the penalty imposed by the Special Court is insufficient for their alleged wrongdoings.
Initially seeking a fine of Rs 11.2 billion, the CIAA received a verdict from the Special Court imposing a fine of Rs 4.86 billion on the three individuals. The Special Court had also sentenced LD Mahat to nine years and one month in jail and Umesh Prasad Dhakal and Chunamani Sharma to nine years in jail.
The CIAA has expressed its reservations on various grounds related to the Special Court’s decision.
