Call for scientific study of census index

KATHMANDU, JANUARY 3: Demographers have called for a scientific and organised study of the census index to address problems of increasing demographic imbalance and migration in the future. In a discussion with the media organized by Tribhuvan University, Central Department of Population Studies yesterday, they emphasized that the authorities should know the population in order to make development plans as per the demographic status of the country.
Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Yogendra Gurung, pointed out the need to apply management rather than control when it comes to population. The study of population is necessary for the economic, social and political policy-making of the country.
Likewise, a reader at the Department, Dr. Padma Prasad Khatiwada said that the importance of population education has increased due to the rapid increase in the exit of young and skilled human resources and fluctuations in the demographics. In collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration, the Department is conducting a two-week intensive training aimed at population scholars, government employees and those active in the diplomatic field.
Information was also shared at the program that, so far, more than 2,300 people have attained master’s degrees, 182 MPhil degrees and 19 people PhD degrees from the Central Department of Population Studies, which was established in 2045 under the Faculty of Humanities and Sociology of Tribhuvan University.
