Kathmandu, Feb 26 . The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has halted issuing license to private schools within the metropolis. The KMC’s move follows the efforts of the government to transform public education by controlling the growth of private schools in city area and encouraging public schools.
Sitaram Koirala, education officer at the KMC confirmed the metropolis’s decision in this regard. “License applications from new private schools scheduled to come into operation from coming academic session have been rejected. We will regulate private schools from now onwards,” he said.
The high level national education commission formed on July 7, 2018 under the chairpersonship of Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel had suggested ending commercialization of education by private schools.
On the matter, General Secretary of Private & Boarding Schools Organisation Rajendra Baniya commented that it would be relevant to stop issuing license to new private schools within the metropolis, but in case of outside of the metropolis he stressed the policy should not apply.
