Several student unions demand withdrawal of increased fees

Kathmandu, May 10 . Different eleven student unions have come together to voice against the rise of tuition fees up to 40 percent by private schools and other academic institutes. The alliance of student unions organised a press meet here today, urging private schools to scrap the decision.
Speaking at a press meet here today, Nepal Students Union former vice-president Rhishikesh Jung Shah said high fees make the education and health services expensive and thus unaffordable for people.
The press statement issued on the occasion makes a demand before the government for allocating 25 percent of the total budget to enhance the quality of public education, stressing that those people being paid by the state coffer should compulsory send their children to community schools.
It seeks the guarantee of return of fees charged additionally by private medical colleges. It has demanded the determination of fees on the basis of people’s per capita income.
ANNISU (Revolutionary) leader arrested Meanwhile, right after the completion of the proramme, police arrested Chiranjibi Dhakal, a student leader close to the Communist Party of Nepal led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplab’. He was taken under control from the local Anamnagar.
Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu spokesperson Hobindra Bogati confirmed his arrest following his departure from the student unions’ programme. Dhakal is the central chair of All Nepal Independent Students Union (ANNISU- Revolutionary) aligned to the party.
According to the range, it has so far arrested 43 people from Kathmandu district and brought them under the purview of law for their connection with the party since the government banned the party for its engagement in violent activities on March 12.
Senior Superintendent of Police Bishwaraj Pokhrel, the police have arrested 343 party leaders and cadres from across the country since then.
