National ID mandatory for realty transactions
KATHMANDU, JUNE 30 : The government has made the national identity card mandatory for transactions related to real estate. The Ministry of Home Affairs lately published a notice in the Nepal Gazette, making national identity cards mandatory for buying and selling land or houses, with effect from January 14, 2025.
Prior to this, a citizenship certificate was required for real estate transactions. This provision has been made with the goal of bringing the national identity card into effect, said Joint Secretary and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.
The ministry has also made the national ID mandatory for services related to banking and financial institutions, social security funds, health insurance, pensions, revenue (personal income tax registration), driver's licenses, and company registration and renewal to be applied in different districts. According to Bhattarai, it will be mandatory to submit a national identity card to get a SIM card for mobile telephone service from January 14, 2025.
It is now necessary to submit a national identity card or a national identity number instead of a citizenship certificate in order to receive public services provided by government agencies, organizations, and the private sector, reads the notice issued by the ministry. -- RSS
